Job Description Job Description Summary: A Hazmat Specialist is responsible for providing support to the Willamette Valley Company’s Regulatory Affairs department. The incumbent will manage large sets of data and perform data entry, participating in product safety classification, labelling, packaging, shipping, and other DOT PHMSA regulated requirements. This position also leads and serves as an administrative resource on solid and hazardous waste management in compliance with obligations outlined by the company’s Waste Management program as overseen by the Hazmat Coordinator. This position requires the aptitude of a conscientious, structured, meticulous person with productive work ethics. Duties: * Support the company’s shipping and operations staff in the safe and compliant transportation of hazardous materials by all modes in both current and future domestic and international lanes. * Utilize expertise based on company-provided hazmat and waste training to support our staff in all elements of a fully functional DOT PHMSA compliance program. * Update and deliver training to affected employees at company facilities as required for shipping, handling, and storage of hazardous materials. * Support facility-based staff in hazardous waste management for VSQG, SQG and LQG requirements, including support in and preparation of shipping manifests. * Conduct periodic compliance audits of company hazmat policies and procedures and their implementation at sites across the business. * Support authoring of hazardous materials transport information on product safety data sheets and labels. * Prepare correspondences for internal and external customers in support of regulatory requirements/internal policies. * Review and apply requirements set out in United States Code, the Code of Federal Regulations, read and interpret Federal Register information, in general maintain a current understanding of requirements, including regular updates and training on current SARA 311, SARA 312, Right to Know, RCRA, and DOT PHMSA (49 CFR), IATA, and IMDG requirements. * Participate on teams and in meetings related to the job position; provide input and leadership. * Set up and maintain other records and procedures as needed. * Attend continuing education courses, professional development seminars and other awareness functions as assigned. * Perform miscellaneous duties as requested by supervisor. Experience: * Minimum of Associates Degree (A. Sc.). Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, or Chemical Engineering preferred. * Knowledge of chemistry and related disciplines is required. * Minimum of 2 years related job experience and/or training pertinent to job-related skills listed above. Or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job * Working knowledge of web applications, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. * Experience with ERP/MRP or ISO quality systems preferred. * Candidates with prior knowledge of Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of classification and labelling, and dangerous goods transportation regulations (IATA/ICAO, DOT, IMDG) are preferred. * Excellent organizational and communication skills. * Ability to work on demanding business, regulatory deadlines and dealing with ambiguous situations while maintaining an elevated level of attention to detail. * Valid Oregon driver’s license.
